The Catholic presence in Tenbury Wells under the name Sacred Heart and Our Lady dates back to 1936, when a six-week mission was held. In 1939 Captain (retired) Avery and his wife purchased a house in Tenbury adjacent to land already owned by the Archdiocese of Birmingham; utilising a stable block on the property, the first Mass in this nascent chapel was celebrated on 6 August 1939. For many years thereafter Tenbury was served by priests from Droitwich and other neighbouring centres.
By the mid-1960s the house, chapel and grounds were bequeathed to the Archdiocese, as fundraising began for a more permanent church. The earlier chapel and house proved structurally unsound and were demolished in 1969. The present church building was constructed in 1973-74, designed by John Wheatley of Cleobury Mortimer, built by Caldicott & Sons of Tenbury Wells.

Originally under the pastoral care of Stourport, the church is now served from Kidderminster, as part of the parish with St Ambrose.
